Six wings had they, these messengers of Him. Else had despair reigned o'er us: Isaiah had foretold It Created me, Thy grace had planned Had not this Child to us been born, We all had been in sin forlorn; Death over us had reigned Had seized their troubled mind; As Simeon once had waited Had I no load of sin to bear, If from God's wrath I had been free. Our fathers had of yore; Had Thy grace not chosen me. Else the world had yet enthralled me, That God His Law had given, To Jesus, who had blessed them, Was it for crimes that I had done Who with thorns had crowned Thee. Sick with sin's poison, all my heart had fainted; My heavy guilt to hell had well-nigh brought me, Through her soul the sword had gone. These the cruel nails had driven; Against whose eating God had warned. For such food angels never had; Such mischief sin had wrought us, And therefore death had brought us Who else had vainly striven, He who our griefs and sorrows had carried Fierce though God's wrath had been, Its fury had passed o'er. When Thomas afterwards had heard That Jesus had fulfilled His word, Had not to earth descended Had not sin's power ended, When He had purged our stains, Life had become a living hell, They had no pow'r to aid me; Had nothing left me but to die; If God Had Not Been on Our Side If God had not been on our side And had not come to aid us, You whom the Lord had foretold suddenly, swiftly descends: And we had lost our way; That she so low had fallen And yet my soul had not espied O that I Had a Thousand Voices O that I had a thousand voices Had His countenance not been Here my guide, I had not seen The light first had its birth; And God had giv'n the gladness, No pow'r had fiercest flames to harm |
